Wilcox and colleagues identify trends in the representation of women at the AcademicSurgical Congress and American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress, highlightingthat women represent a minority of moderators and panelists at both meetings, with20% of panels composed of men only, or “manels.” On June 12, 2019, Dr Francis Collins,the Director of the NIH, released a public statement advocating for the end of all-malespeaking panels because they can prevent women and other underrepresented groups inscience from achieving their full potential.
