Researchers anticipate cancer uptick in Wisconsin in 2026

WISCONSIN — New data from the American Cancer Society released Wednesday showed Wisconsin could see more cancer cases in 2026 than the state had in 2025.

“There are a lot of things that can contribute to the increase in cancer cases we see year to year,” said Dr. Shikha Jain, a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. “One of the big things is we have great ways of screening, so mammograms, colonoscopies — we’re finding people with earlier diagnoses because they get screened earlier on.”

While overall case numbers may be higher, the fight against cancer continues to be more successful overall, with survival rates far better than they’d been back in the 1970s.

“There are a lot of really innovative and wonderful breakthroughs that have happened in cancer care,” Jain said. “[For instance,] immunotherapy are types of drugs that use your own immune system to fight cancer, so that has been really transformative.”
