Princess of Wales Diagnosed with Cancer: NewsNation

First I want to emphasize that the Princess and her family deserve privacy as they navigate this diagnosis and her treatment. It’s very difficult to deal with a cancer diagnosis when not in the public eye. I imagine these last few weeks must have been especially horrible for her and the royal family with all the speculation accusations and rumors.

Second with the information she provided today, it is not a good idea to speculate what type of cancer or what type of chemo she is receiving. Chemo in the adjuvant setting (after a surgery in this case) can often be done to help prevent any microscopic cancer cells from causing problems in the future. But again, to guess what type of cancer she has or anything else about the diagnosis is irresponsible. If she and her family decide to release that information in the future then that will be their choice. No need to spread more rumors

Third whenever someone with a large national or international platform comes out with a personal medical story, it takes great bravery and can have a positive impact. Hopefully it results in more people visiting their Dr when they have unexplained symptoms, and stay up to date with screening like colonoscopies at age 45 and mammograms at age 40. Some people need earlier preventative studies depending on risk factors and family history.

Fourth we are seeing more young people with cancer these days. There is data showing processed foods, red meat, alcohol, smoking can all contribute to risk factors for cancer. Health lifestyles and habits are very important for prevention.

Finally, many people with cancer don’t “look sick” but may still be having symptoms from the cancer or from the treatments they are receiving. Show people grace and empathy.

I hope we reflect on how this has been handled these last few weeks and realize that medical challenges can impact anyone. This need to constantly know what is happening in the lives of others, especially those with large public personas, can lead to situations like this one. Think before you post.
