CBS: Metro Detroit mother concerned about impact of hot weather on mailed epinephrine

I recently had the opportunity to discuss an important issue on CBS News: the improper storage of medications, especially during the hot weather we’re experiencing. Many people are unaware that excessive heat can significantly reduce the effectiveness of some medications, leading to serious health risks.

One major challenge is the rise of mail-order medications. While convenient, these services can struggle with temperature regulation during transit. Medications can be exposed to extreme temperatures, especially during summer months, potentially altering their chemical composition and effectiveness. This is not just a minor inconvenience—it can result in increased medical mortality and morbidity. For patients relying on these medications to manage chronic conditions or critical health issues, the consequences can be severe. Like less than effective medication to treat a life threatening allergic reaction.

It’s essential to follow storage guidelines strictly and keep medications in a cool, dry place. If you’re using mail-order services, consider discussing temperature-sensitive medications with your pharmacist or healthcare provider and explore options for ensuring safe delivery. Let’s spread awareness and ensure that everyone understands the importance of proper medication storage and safe delivery for maintaining health and safety.
